Name: Jeanne D’Arc Door: Left Canon: Granblue Fantasy Canon Point: After the Summer event Age: 19 Appearance: Light Dark Swimsuit History: In the world of Granblue Fantasy, Orleans is not a place in France but rather one of the floating sky islands that make up the known world. This particular island is inhabited by descendants of heroes who fought in the Astral War 500 years ago, and these descendants dedicate their lives to training in the military arts in case the Astrals ever return and warriors are needed once more. Jeanne was born and raised in Orleans, and she took her training very seriously. In technical skills she was at the top of the class, but she had a poor record in sparring sessions as she had a deep fear of hurting others. It wasn’t a serious problem as even an island like Orleans didn’t need every single citizen in fighting shape, so Jeanne thought she’d just live her life out unremarkably. But fate had something different in mind for her, and one night she received a revelation. A great dragon (Bahamut, the closest thing to an omnipotent god in Granblue,) came to her in a dream and commanded her to go forth and save the world. That vision gave her the motivation to overcome her fears, and she dove back into training with renewed vigour, becoming the undisputed best fighter in Orleans. A while later, the crew of the Grandcypher would visit Orleans on a mission, and there they would meet Jeanne D’Arc. Jeanne was struck by the aura of their mascot tiny dragon Vyrn, which felt strikingly similar to that of the figure in her dreams, and she joined the crew believing that it was the path towards her destiny. Her journey with the crew was fruitful, but the time would come when Jeanne received another revelation, this time telling her that she was needed to overthrow an oppressive local government. She temporarily left the crew to attend to this matter, but the scale and strength of the enemy was far greater than she expected and the militia she assembled was overwhelmed, the village burning to the ground leaving her the only one left alive. The crew would retrieve her soon after, but Jeanne was fundamentally changed. Her faith in the revelation was shattered, and the trauma left her weak and bedridden for several days. However, she would soon receive another message from beyond, telling her that her revelations had been hijacked by the Enemy -- denizens of the Otherworld -- that they were intentionally trying to lead her astray, and that she still had one more mission: To bring Vyrn to a certain location and eliminate him. Jeanne tried and came close to success, but ultimately was torn between her great mission and her loyalty to her crew members. In the end, she realised that the psychic messages she was receiving were mostly from the Enemy, included the one that sent her on that tragic failure and left her vulnerable to further suggestion. Her reliance on divine messages instead of a strong internal moral compass had brought her to the brink of doing something irreparable, and that (secular) revelation brought her back to normal. Now she tries to live her life as just someone else who tries to help others because she wants to, not as a zealot following whatever psychic commands pop into her head. Personality: Jeanne D’Arc has been called a saint, and though she might deny such a title, few can argue that it fits her perfectly. Her dedication to the cause cannot be denied, manifesting in her willingness to charge headlong into battle no matter how lopsided the odds, often emerging victorious if for no other reason than her sheer stubborn faith in the righteousness of her cause. There is also no questioning her fundamental kindness, for that is exactly why she marches into battle to save the world, despite the fact that she hates battle and would much rather be at home sewing or baking. However, she had relied overly much on her power of revelation for far too long, without knowing that the psychic messages she received from the higher power could be compromised, and that has left her with a degree of moral myopia. She believed that the battles her revelations led her towards were of the greatest priority and lost sight of why she was fighting and of the basic requirement to pass moral judgement by herself: something that she is slowly relearning as she shakes off the lingering miasma of the Otherworld on her mind. On top of that, having dedicated most of her adolescent and adult life to the cause, and the militarily-minded city of Orleans not having much to do with the rest of the world, Jeanne can come off as surprisingly naive. There is much of the world she hasn’t experienced, and she’s incredibly aware of that fact. For example, she had never seen a swimsuit until he crewmates made her buy one, and would certainly have a hard time adjusting to even more exotic situations than that. That said, she is a quick learner and unlikely to let merely being surprised keep her from acting in what she feels is in the best interests of those under her protection. As she is aware of both of those things, and currently feels guilty about her stint as a tool of the enemy, she can be overly obeisant. She felt guilty about merely playing with the other crew members instead of actively contributing to their mission until the Captain gave her permission to enjoy herself, and in general chooses to defer judgement to the people she trusts as she tries to find herself. This can also end up coming off as being slightly clingy towards the few people she does fully trust, their presence and touch often being the only way to calm Jeanne down. Despite her skill in housework and gardening, and the fact that her hairband has a big flower in it, Jeanne is noted to not be much of a fan of “girly” things like fashion and especially gossiping. Despite her true talents and destiny being at the frontline of a battlefield leading the charge, and needing all the skill with leading and communicating with others that entails, she’s ultimately a fairly private person, not seeing the need to put on a show for anyone but herself and her god. Powers and Abilities: Jeanne can change her hair and eye colours based on her current moral alignment, it’s wild. For actual powers, she’s excellent at both sword and spear combat, and has the ability to create blades of pure energy which she uses to blast her enemies or to enhance her strikes. She’s particularly talented in small group battles, empowering her allies with her encouragement and breaking enemy defences with her innovative, almost miraculous tactics. Also good at sewing and baking. Inventory: One (1) sword. One (1) flag-polearm combination. The armour she’s wearing. Butter cookies. Samples: 1 and 2 |
